Victim expected to survive, police say

An unidentified Laurel Walmart employee was shot early Wednesday during what police said was a commercial armed robbery of the store.

Anne Arundel County police responded to reports of a shooting at 4:17 a.m. at the parking lot of the store in the 3500 block of East Russett Green, which is open 24 hours a day. They found a 28-year-old man suffering from wounds to the upper body. The man, who is a store employee, was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

The suspect, whose face was obscured, accosted the victim inside the store, threatened him with a weapon and demanded money from the business, police said. The victim handed over an undisclosed amount of cash but the suspect still forced him outside and shot him on the parking lot, police said. Within minutes of the robbery, police found a vehicle engulfed in flames at Hammerstone Road and Mayaone Street, a nearby intersection. Officers believe the suspect drove that car from the scene of the robbery.

Anyone with information should contact Det. Eric Wills of the robbery unit at 410-222-3432(3566) or Metro Crime Stoppers.
