Orioles outfielder Lew Ford, who was limited at the end of September with discomfort in his midsection, underwent sports hernia surgery this month, according to a club source. Ford is expected to make a full recovery and be without restrictions when spring training begins in February. He could not be reached for comment. The 36-year-old outfielder batted .183 with three homers and four RBIs in 25 games for the Orioles in 2012 after hitting .331 in 62 games for Triple-A Norfolk. Ford started his storybook season with the independent Atlantic League Long Island Ducks and ended it in the major league postseason. In late September, Ford missed six days with pain in his midsection that was diagnosed as a bone bruise near his hip. He was cleared for the playoffs and had three hits in eight at-bats in the Orioles' loss to the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. In the 3-1 finale, Ford's eighth inning RBI single provided the Orioles' lone run against Yankees ace CC Sabathia. Ford is eligible for arbitration this offseason; the Orioles have until Nov. 30 to decide whether to tender him a contract for next year.

NBA: The Washington Wizards waived center-forward Brian Cook and guard Shelvin Mack. Cook averaged 3.1 points and 2.5 rebounds in 16 games last season with the Wizards. Mack, selected by Washington with the 34th overall pick in the 2011 draft, averaged 3.6 points and 2.0 assists in 64 games last season.

Women's billiards: Eugenia Gyftopoulos of Baltimore is among 48 women's pool players who will compete at the WPBA Tour Championships on Nov. 7-11 in Lincoln City, Ore.
