Hurricane Sandy forces area malls to close

October 29, 2012|Lorraine Mirabella

Hurricane Sandy forced many area retailers to close Monday.

Mall owner General Growth Properties shut down its Baltimore-area malls including Harborplace & The Gallery in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Towson Town Center in Towson, White Marsh Mall in White Marsh, Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore city and The Mall in Columbia.

The Gallery remains ccessible for office tenants and guests of the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel. Management expects to know later today whether the malls will re-open on Tuesday.

At Whole Foods in Harbor East, dozens of shoppers scurried through the aisles or hustled to join one of the long check-out lines. The store will close at 2 p.m. today but plans to re-open at 10 am tomorrow.

Most other stores in the area already had closed.

Sandbags had been piled up outside Philips seafood in the Inner Harbor, and few cars drove along Pratt Street.
