Oct. 31, 1995: The Orioles name former player Davey Johnson as manager a year after passing him over for Phil Regan, who led the Birds to a 71-73 finish. "I felt like there were a lot of stupid people out there," Johnson says of the snub, conceding that he thought of passing up this opportunity because of it. "Then I said, 'Who am I kidding? If they offer me that job, I'll crawl to Baltimore to take it.'" He'll run the club for two years and make the playoffs both times.
Oct. 29, 1983: Boomer Esiason's two touchdown passes lift Maryland (7-1) to a 28-26 upset of third-ranked and previously undefeated North Carolina before 51,200 jubilant fans at Byrd Stadium in College Park.
Nov. 1, 1975: Howard High wins its 45th consecutive football game with a 39-0 rout of Glenelg. John Overbey scores three touchdowns for the Lions (9-0), defending state Class B champions.
Oct. 30, 1965: City's football team rolls to its ninth straight victory, 32-7 over St. John's, ranked No. 4 in Washington, before 3,500 at Kirk Field. Coach George Young's team, 6-0 on the year, gain 457 yards as Ken Dutton rushes for three touchdowns and Kurt Schmoke passes for another.
Nov. 2, 1963: Leroy Kelly runs for a touchdown and Morgan State intercepts three passes and recovers five fumbles as coach Earl Banks' Bears (5-1) blank previously unbeaten North Carolina A&T, 23-0, at homecoming at Hughes Stadium.
Oct. 28, 1956: Rookie Lenny Moore rushes for 185 yards, including touchdowns of 72 and 79 yards, and Johnny Unitas passes for two TDs in his first start as the Colts (2-3) defeat the visiting Green Bay Packers, 28-21.
Nov. 1, 1938: "He's the best horse in the world," Seabiscuit's jockey, George Woolf, says after defeating Triple Crown winner War Admiral by four lengths and setting a course record, in their long-awaited match race before an announced 40,000 at Pimlico.
Oct. 31, 1942: Dave McNally who, with 181 victories, is the all-time winningest left-hander in Orioles history. He died in 2002.
