Support groups

The Department of Aging and Disabilities has updated a booklet on community support groups. The booklet focuses on groups for care giving, Alzheimer's disease, bereavement for adults and children, diabetes, brain injury, cancer, stroke, cardiac and pulmonary problems, Parkinson's, and bowel and urinary diversions. The booklet is free and available at the department, 2666 Riva Road, fourth floor, Annapolis, or online at aacounty.org/aging/resources/community_support_groups.pdf. Information: 410-222-4257.

Trips for 2012

Members of the Annapolis Senior Activity Center can stop by the trip desk for a preview of 2012 outings and to make reservations and deposits. Information: 410-222-1818.

Residents' rights

Brochures on residents' rights in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities and another brochure on the ombudsman program protecting those residents are available from the Department of Aging and Disabilities. The brochures are titled "Resident's Rights in Nursing Homes/Rehabilitation Centers in Maryland," "Resident's Rights in Assisted Living Facilities in Maryland" and "Ombudsman: Your Resident Advocate." Senior services

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2012-2013 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The free directory is printed annually in May (Older Americans Month) and includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county social services benefits and caregiver information. Copies are available at department headquarters, 2666 Riva Road, fourth floor, Annapolis; the seven senior activity centers; county libraries; at CVS, Food Lion and Wawa stores; and online at aacounty.org/aging. Senior housing

Information on assisted-living homes and other housing options for seniors has been updated on the county Department of Aging and Disabilities website at aacounty.org/aging.

Party A "Sailing Way" Halloween party will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31. The event features a costume contest for all ages, and grandchildren can parade and trick-or-treat from classroom to classroom. Light refreshments will be served, and music will be provided by Swarbrick and Birney.

Wellness day The annual Caregivers' Wellness Day will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10. This is a day to nurture the nonprofessional, unpaid family caregiver. Lunch will be provided. Register by Nov. 6.

Financial planning A workshop on retirement and making your money last will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 13. The workshop covers 10 principles leading to a stable retirement income.

Hearing screenings Allied Hearing Associates of Annapolis offers screenings on a first come, first served basis from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14.

Party A Monster Mash Dance Party celebrating Halloween will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31. Participants are invited to wear costumes, with prizes being awarded in various categories. Music will be provided by the Bates Jazz and R&B Ensemble.

The Pascal Go-Getters present their fall show from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.

Concert Asbury United Methodist Church's Handbell Choir performs from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 9.

Spine health Edward Bartlinski of Bartlinski Chiropractic will perform a spinal scan and offer a mini-consultation about spine health from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Nov. 13. Appointments will be taken starting Nov. 9.

Caregiver group meeting A support group for men will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 13. The group was established when men who are caregivers decided they have unique issues they wish to discuss and to seek support from other men in similar circumstances. Free.

Classes Peggy Bruce will teach American Sign Language from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21. Participants will learn basic signs, numbers and letters and receive an introduction to finger spelling. Also, Flo Ormond will teach "One-Stroke Painting" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 13. Learn a special way to load paint on your brush and techniques that can be used to paint many items, including glass, fabric, paper and craft items.

Scrabble Challenge your brain by playing Scrabble, 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. New participants are welcome.

Foot specialist Podiatrist Milton Glazier will meet with center members to talk about foot treatments from noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 and 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 8.
