A 32-year-old man operating his vehicle as a taxi was shot in the torso during a robbery by a passenger while driving in the 1300 block of N. Central Avenue in East Baltimore on Thursday night, according to Baltimore Police.

Police responded to the scene in the city's Oliver neighborhood about 8:42 p.m. The man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, said Sgt. Anthony Smith, a police spokesman.

Police believe the man was shot after the passenger, or multiple passengers, attempted to rob him as he drove, Smith said.

"Whoever it was in the car tried to rob him, he gets shot, then strikes a parked car," Smith said, noting the man crashed his vehicle before coming to a stop.

No further information was immediately available.

The shooting occurred about two blocks from a fatal shooting in the Oliver neighborhood Wednesday night.

Also on Thursday, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot about 2:30 p.m. in southern Baltimore's Westport neighborhood.
