Howard County Conservancy — Seeking Wednesday morning drop-in gardening volunteers to help maintain the plant gardens on the conservancy property. Howard County Historical Society — Seeking volunteers for a variety of projects, including the Holiday House Tour, Antique Appraisal Fair, Education Trunk programs, systems maintenance, data entry, exhibit design, historical and genealogical research, and basic office functions. Howard County Legacy Leadership Institute for the Environment — Recruiting for 2013 class of legacy leaders. Program is designed for persons 50 and older who want to gain skills and knowledge about the environment, and create a legacy through their volunteer work. Classes begin Jan. 31 and meet at the Robinson Nature Center, in Columbia; Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt; and the Howard County Conservancy, at Mt. Pleasant Farm, in Woodstock. After graduation in September 2013, leaders will begin 100 hours of mentored field placements. $75 is due at time of enrollment. Application deadline is Dec. 31, 2012. Howard County Local Children's Board — Seeking county applicants who are interested in serving on the Local Children's Board. Board members serve five-year terms, and help plan and develop a continuum of services and programs for children and youths in Howard County. Candidates must be Howard County residents, 18 or older; have an interest in children and youth services; and be able to attend the board's meetings, which are held quarterly at a minimum, 8:30-10 a.m., at the Howard County Office of Children's Services in Ellicott City. The board is also accepting applications from high school students interested in serving two-year terms. KidsPeace Foster Care and Community Programs — Seeking caring individuals and families to be foster parents (financial reimbursement will be provided) and/or volunteer mentors to children, teens and teen mothers. Laurel Regional Hospital — Seeking volunteers to assist at the main information desk and in the gift shop primarily on evenings and weekends. Volunteers must be dependable, responsible and friendly adults able to commit to a scheduled three-hour shift for the information desk. Meals on Wheels — Seeking volunteers to deliver meals to homebound residents in the central Maryland area. Distribution site is located at 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia, MD 21044. Meals are picked up by volunteers at the site and delivered between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Mt. Hebron High School's Viking Backers Booster Club — Seeking volunteers for the 2012-13 school year. Positions available include vice president-ways and means, assistant treasurer and winter fundraiser coordinator, each requiring no more than a few hours per week. Neighbor Ride — Seeking volunteers to help Howard County seniors remain active and independent by providing rides for medical appointments, shopping, social outings, fitness classes, personal care and business appointments, religious services, volunteer commitments and other day-to-day activities. Flexible daytime, evening and weekend volunteer opportunities are available. Volunteer drivers choose rides that fit their work and personal schedules; and are convenient to their homes, offices and daily routines.
