Howard County Legacy Leadership Institute for the Environment — Recruiting for 2013 class of legacy leaders. Program is designed for persons 50 and older who want to gain skills and knowledge about the environment, and create a legacy through their volunteer work. Classes begin Jan. 31 and meet at the Robinson Nature Center, in Columbia; Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt; and the Howard County Conservancy, at Mt. Pleasant Farm, in Woodstock. Howard County Local Children's Board — Seeking county applicants who are interested in serving on the Local Children's Board. Board members serve five-year terms, and help plan and develop a continuum of services and programs for children and youths in Howard County. Candidates must be Howard County residents, 18 or older; have an interest in children and youth services; and be able to attend the board's meetings, which are held quarterly at a minimum, 8:30-10 a.m., at the Howard County Office of Children's Services in Ellicott City. The board is also accepting applications from high school students interested in serving two-year terms. Meals on Wheels — Seeking volunteers to deliver meals to homebound residents in the central Maryland area. Distribution site is located at 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia, MD 21044. Meals are picked up by volunteers at the site and delivered between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Neighbor Ride — Seeking volunteers to help Howard County seniors remain active and independent by providing rides for medical appointments, shopping, social outings, fitness classes, personal care and business appointments, religious services, volunteer commitments and other day-to-day activities. Flexible daytime, evening and weekend volunteer opportunities are available. Volunteer drivers choose rides that fit their work and personal schedules; and are convenient to their homes, offices and daily routines.
