A 19-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in East Baltimore's Berea neighborhood, police said.

Homicide detectives are investing the shooting, which occurred around 3:20 at the intersection of E. Hoffman Street and N. Milfton Avenue. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he died, said a police spokesman, who did not identify him.

There have been 175 homicides in Baltimore so far this year, compared with last year's 12-month total of 198.

According to police statistics released last week — which do not include the most recent killings — homicides in Baltimore were up by 5 percent and homicides from gunshots have increased by 17 percent when compared with last year. Total gun crimes were down by 10 percent and shootings have decreased by 7 percent, according to the data.
