A suspect fleeing from police died after hitting another vehicle and striking a tree near the intersection of Broadway and Biddle streets in East Baltimore late Friday, police said.

The accident occurred shortly before midnight after officers assigned to a specialized unit that focuses on narcotics and gun offenders attempted to stop a green SUV. Police said they observed behavior that indicated the passenger was armed.

The driver died and the passenger is listed in serious but stable condition, police said. The occupants of the vehicle that the suspect hit were transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where they're listed in stable condition.

Police said recovered a handgun and two replica guns from the SUV.

The identities of the suspects are being withheld, pending notification of family and the filing of formal charges.

The Baltimore Police Accident Investigation Unit are investigating the accident and conducting scene reconstruction and witness interviews.
