ASO launches new event

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra will host its inaugural "Mingling for Music," a happy hour-style event, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Crown & Anchor Pub, 12 Dock St. in Annapolis. Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the door. There will be live music, a sampling of English and American hors d'oeuvres, and food and drink specials. 'Crimes of the Heart'

The Dignity Players presents Beth Henley's play about family, complex relationships, lost love and the ways a family manages to compromise Oct. 25-Nov. 3 at Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, 333 Dubois Road. 'Sunlight'

The Colonial Players presents this drama with political overtones about strained family relationships Oct. 26-Nov. 17 at 108 East St. in Annapolis. Yard sale

Book sale

The American Association of University Women will hold its annual book sale Nov. 1-4 at 8151-D Ritchie Highway in the festival at Pasadena Shopping Center. Hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 1; 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Nov. 2; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov.3 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 4. A public pre-sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Nov. 1, and there is a $10 entry fee. Tax season

Volunteers are needed to assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to help seniors and low-income adults with their 2012 tax returns. Participants will be trained by the IRS and the Maryland Comptroller's Office. They will help only with simple 2012 income tax returns, which will be filed electronically. Volunteers do not do tax returns involving partnerships or corporations, self-employed persons or rental properties. Volunteers are not required to have a financial background, but certified public accountants, attorneys, bookkeepers and those with financial training are encouraged to volunteer. Volunteers will be stationed at one of the county's senior activity centers and will be available by appointment between Feb. 4 and April 5. For more information, call 410-222-6717.

Voters' guide

Two versions of the voters' guide for the 2012 general election, prepared by the League of Women Voters, are available on the Internet. The guide is a nonpartisan tool voters can use to evaluate the candidates and issues on this year's ballot, which includes seven statewide questions and 15 county charter amendment proposals. The interactive electronic version can be accessed through vote411.org. The site also provides information about districts, polling places, early voting and absentee ballots. The complete Voters' Guide for Anne Arundel County is also available for online viewing and PDF download at aa.lwvmd.org. Limited copies of the print version are expected to be available shortly at county senior centers and libraries.

Haunted house

The Bowie Baysox and Tulip Gulch have opened the gates to the Doomsday Asylum Haunted House. This new attraction runs Fridays-Saturdays this month as well as Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 29-31. The show features more than 30 actors, special effects and props, and takes approximately 20 minutes to walk through. The Asylum is rated PG-13; parental discretion is strongly advised. The show takes place indoors. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and tours run from sundown to 11 p.m. Tickets are $15 when ordered online; $17 at the door. Fall music series

The St. Anne's Concert Series continues at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, with Baroque music by the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra at the church on Church Circle in Annapolis.
