Regressive Progressive

October 16, 2012|By John E. McIntyre | The Baltimore Sun

As if the Progressive Insurance commercials with that woman were not already sufficiently irritating, they have now added violations of grammar.

As is frequently the case when the ignorant attempt archaisms, they get the verbs wrong. The -eth suffix is used only with third-person singular verbs. Tacking it on to second-person verbs or plural verbs is a solecism, one of which Progressive Insurance is now guilty.

Next, I suppose, we can expect them to set a commercial in Ye Olde Tea Shoppe, pronouncing ye as "yee" and shoppe as a disyllable. Faugh.
