Admiral's Cup opening weekend of Oct. 19 in Fells Point

UPDATE: The Admiral's Cup's opening has been postponed until the weekend of Oct. 19

The Admiral's Cup is opening Friday. The bar, which occupies a pivotal piece of Fells Point real estate, has been closed since 2007. The property is now owned by the Kali's Restaurant Group (Kali's Court, Mezze, Tapas Adela).

According to manager Kenneth Petty, the ground-level space has been converted by Rita St. Clair Associates into a "mariners' bar," with detailing that suggests the interior of a cruise ship.

Version one of the Admiral's Cup was launched in the early 1980s. Before that, it was a saloon called Jake & Mary's, which was sold in 1982 by the original owners' daughter, Helen Christopher, with the stipulation that she could live in the rooms above the bar.

This is from the obituary Rafael Alvarez wrote of Christopher for the Baltimore Sun in 1994: "Helen Christopher liked to sit in her apartment above the Fells Point saloon her parents bought in 1916 and watch the world go by. From one room, she could see the bustle of Broadway. From another, ships and tugs in the harbor."

I remember the 1980s Admiral Cup as being kind of preppy. If, in its last years, it looked seriously weather-beaten, it had been - by a succession of hurricanes and the floods that come with them. Isabel, which hit in 2003, was the worst of them.

The new Admiral's Cup is at 1647 Thames St. For information call 410-534-5555 or go to
