One Maryland One Book author appearances

September 27, 2012|By Dave Rosenthal

The One Maryland One Book program picks up steam this weekend, as the author of "The Cellist of Sarajevo" speaks the Baltimore Book Festival and makes other appearances around the state.

Steven Galloway's novel takes the reader to the city that was put under siege by warring factions after Yugoslavia dissolved. It's a gripping, fast-paced read, told through the eyes of several residents who are either participating in the violence, or the victims of it. Their tales are woven around that of the real-life cellist who performed outdoors amid the sniper fire and shelling that riddled the city's buildings and population.

Galloway will speak Sunday at noon at the festival -- in an event featuring a cello performance by the Peabody Conservatory -- and will visit other towns around the state next week. Another  intriguing appearance is Thursday, Oct. 4, at Notre Dame University of Maryland's LeClerc Auditorium. There will be a cello performance by Todd Thiel, and if you've read the book, it promises to be a haunting effect. Tickets are required; you can register online or call 410.532.5524.

And, of course, if you can't make it to the Galloway appearances, there are lots of other One Maryland One Book discussions going on around the state.
