BOSTON -- If the Orioles manage to win the American League East, they could cost one sports betting website hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When offshore online sportsbook Bovada.lv released it’s the season-opening odds in late March, the Orioles were 100-to-1 longshots to win the division.
The Orioles -- who entered Friday’s series opener in Boston one game behind the division-leading Yankees with 13 games remaining in the regular season – had more favorable 11-to-5 odds to win the AL East as of Friday afternoon.
But if someone placed a modest $20 bet for the Orioles to win the division on Opening Day, they could be looking at a cool $2,000.
According to Kevin Bradley, the sportsbook manager at Bovada.lv, enough bettors took the Orioles to win the division that that his website would take a serious financial hit.
“There are some bettors who have them locked in at 150-to-1 or 100-to-1 for the World Series, but not enough that it would be a big loss for the book,” Bradley said. “However, the O’s opened at 100-to-1 to win the AL East and that is a six-figure loss for us.”
The Orioles opened the season with 150-to-1 odds of winning the World Series. Only the Houston Astros, who were 200-to-1, were bigger longshots. Those odds shrunk to 15-to-1 as of Friday afternoon. The Orioles were also the biggest longshot of winning the AL pennant (75-to-1 odds) on Opening Day. Now, the Orioles have 7-to-1 odds of winning the pennant.
“Baltimore opened the season at 150-to-1 [to win the World Series] but after playing as well as they did found themselves hovering around 30- to 40-to-1 midway through the season,” Bradley said. “They did start slumping and crept back up to 100-to-1, but now have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs, in what I would say would be one of biggest pre-season long shots to make the playoffs that I can remember.”
