Orioles' bullpen options tonight after 18-inning win over Mariners

September 19, 2012|Baltimore Sun staff

Here’s what tonight’s bullpen probably looks like after the Orioles’ 18-inning game and the call-up of top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy:

Long relief

Zach Phillips (L)

Middle relief

Luis Ayala

Brian Matusz (L)

Jim Johnson

Against the Mariners on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning after starter Wei-Yin Chen was only able to go 5 1/3 innings, Jake Arrieta went 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Matusz faced just two batters and threw 12 pitches, Darren O’Day went 1 2/3, Pedro Strop pitched an inning, Steve Johnson threw three innings, Tommy Hunter threw two and Johnson closed out the win, facing three batters and throwing 13 pitches.

The Orioles will start Joe Saunders (2-2, 4.30 ERA) against the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez (13-8, 2.92  ERA). If Saunders struggles, Bundy will likely be called on. Phillips and Ayala both pitched Monday, while Matusz and Johnson pitched Tuesday. One wild card to consider is Miguel Gonzalez, who is scheduled to start in Boston on Friday. He has pitched out of the bullpen before, but using him would  mean the Orioles need a starter Friday. They could turn to Randy Wolf, who started Sunday in Oakland, or Steve Johnson, if he bounces back strong from his three innings Tuesday night.

One thing working in the Orioles’ favor: an off-day Thursday.
