Health care 'navigators' must be carefully chosen

September 19, 2012

I wholeheartedly agree with Leni Preston's commentary on Maryland's health exchange ("Women have a pivotal role in health reform," Sept. 16). It is imperative we identify the specific competencies that are required.

However, we must also assure that an infrastructure is in place to provide the quality training, assessment, coaching and mentoring that is needed to enable the navigators to demonstrate these competencies beforehand.

Additionally, there will be a high percentage of women and their children with behavioral health conditions and co-occurring disorders. The navigators will need the screening skills to help with steering them to a robust coverage that will encompass these needs.
