It has been quite a stretch of ideal September weather in the Baltimore area, but it is expected to come to a wet end Monday night.

Through Sunday, the region has seen eight consecutive days with highs between 75 degrees and 83 degrees and no rain, as measured at BWI Marshall Airport. Monday, for most of the day at least, should be no different -- a high of 76 degrees with sun and some clouds, gradually increasing throughout the day.

Monday night, showers are expected to begin and to roll into a drenching Tuesday.

Rainfall could total about 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service's models. That could challenge the record rainfall for that date, 2.13 inches -- which dates to Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

There are likely to be storms, not just rain. The weather service's Storm Prediction Center is calling for a 30 percent chance of severe weather along a stretch from South Carolina to New Jersey, including Central Maryland.

Coastal areas in Harford, Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties, Baltimore City and Southern Maryland are under a coastal flood watch for Tuesday, according to the weather service's Sterling, Va., office. High tides could be 2 feet above normal Tuesday afternoon and evening, according to the watch advisory.

Once the wet weather clears out, the rest of the week will be nice again, for the most part. It will be significantly cooler, with highs forecast in the low 70s, with a few chances for showers sprinkled in.

More rain could be in store on Saturday, according to early forecasts.

If the forecasts hold up, the rain could help September become a second month in a row with above-normal precipitation in Maryland. There has been 1.25 inches of rain measured so far this month at BWI, 0.79 inches below normal as of Monday. Normal rainfall for the month os 4.03 inches.
