The HCC cross country team opened the 2012 season Sept. 8 at Wilmington University in Delware, with the men placing fifth and the women 10th out of 12 schools.

Sophomore Filagot Dinku led the men with a third-place finish in a time of 29:50. He was followed by Andrew Parlette (19th in 31:38), Juan Cortez (30th in 32:51), Rafael Fernandez (39th in 33:46), Alex Warfield (46th in 34:08), Ed Richardson (55th in 34:58), Edgar Propst (58th in 35:25), John Leierzapf (61st in 35:41) and Javier Diaz-Guerra (67th in 37:35).

The women's team was led by freshman Anna Sandacz, who placed 36th with a time of 24:54. The team's other runners were Naomi Mills (64th in 28:00), Rachael Lape (68th in 28:18), Shannon Stubs (72nd in 29:48), Kayla Johnson (75th in 31:48) and Destiny Jones (77th in 33:01).

"We wanted an early challenge in the schedule," coach Steve Musselman said. "The only flat parts of the course were the start and the finish, and that was about 100 meters. We wanted to see how we handled a course like this."

The Dragons will next travel to York College for a meet this weekend.
