Charles "Chuck" Busnuk, a retired Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene grants writer, died of cancer Aug. 31 at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. He was 64 and lived in Canton.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Highlandtown, he was a 1966 graduate of Archbishop Curley High School, where he played the cymbals in the school band. He earned a bachelor's degree in geography from Morgan State University.

In 1970, he became a juvenile counselor for the Juvenile Services Administration. He subsequently joined the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and held various positions, retiring as a grants management and procurement officer in 2002. He worked in the AIDS Administration, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration and the Developmental Disabilities Administration.

He later worked for The Baltimore Sun and became a courier for the real estate firm, David S. Brown Enterprises.

He was active in Dignity USA, Baltimore Frontrunners, the Human Rights Campaign and New Ways Ministry.

He enjoyed travel and visited Italy and the Vatican. He also belonged to the Adventuring Group in Washington and took lengthy bike rides on the Eastern Shore. He went on camping vacations and read newspapers.

Mr. Busnuk was a longtime subscriber to Center Stage and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Mount Royal and Lafayette avenues, where he was a member.

Survivors include his life partner and spouse of 25 years, George D. Harris, a policy analyst at the Social Security Administration; and a brother, Gerald "Jerry" Busnuk, both of Baltimore.
