Fire destroys vacant Baltimore apartment home

Investigators seek source and cause of fire

Baltimore City firefighters spent Thursday morning battling a fire in a vacant brick building in the Glen neighborhood. Fire had been extinguished in the same brick building 12 hours earlier on Wednesday evening.

Smoke was billowing from the roof of the three-story structure in the 3700 block of Fords Lane, near Park Heights Avenue, when firefighters arrived shortly before 8 a.m. Crews took water lines into the interior and encountered heavy fire on the second floor. Crews have also pulled down ceilings to check for hidden fire.

"We are saturating the inside and checking for hot spots," said Chief Kevin Cartwright, fire department spokesman.

Firefighters had responded to the same location, which appears to be a large home converted into several apartments, at 6:39 p.m. Wednesday. That fire went to two alarms and took about 45 minutes to extinguish.

"At this point, we are not sure if the fire re-ignited or if there is another cause," Cartwright said.

No injuries were reported. Investigators remained on the scene Thursday, working to determine the source and cause of the fire.
