One of the area's top defensive ends, D'Avanzo dominated on both sides of the ball in the No. 14 Friars' 18-13 season-opening victory over Patterson at the I-95 Kickoff Classic on Friday. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound senior had 14 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble and a blocked punt. At wingback, he made a one-handed grab on third-and-long for a 16-yard gain that set up the Friars' first touchdown. His sack and forced fumble set up the second score, and his blocked punt led to the game-winning touchdown, which he scored on a 3-yard run with two minutes left in the game. He finished with 66 yards on seven carries. D'Avanzo, who has a 2.85 GPA, has orally committed to play at Temple.
