McFadden 1st in preliminary round of 800 meters T54

Tatyana McFadden (Atholton) won Round 1 of the women's 800 meters T54 at the London Paralympics on Tuesday, finishing in 1 minute, 47.66 seconds. She will compete in the final today.

Women's swimming: Jessica Long, formerly of Middle River, won the silver medal in the 100 backstroke S8. Long surged from third place at the halfway mark and finished in 1:18.67. Earlier in the day, she won the heat in 1:21.75.


Terps women's basketball team to open vs. Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 9

Maryland released its women's basketball nonconference schedule for the 2012-13 season Tuesday. The Terps will open the season Nov. 9 against visiting Mount St. Mary's. They will then play at Loyola on (Nov. 11) and St. Joseph's (Nov. 17). Other highlights include games at Nebraska (Nov.28), Connecticut (Dec. 3 in the Jimmy V Classic) and Delaware (Dec. 20).

Men's basketball: UMES promoted former graduate assistant Curtis Peery to full-time assistant coach. Peery will enter his fourth season with the Hawks.

Field hockey: Maryland sophomores Maxine Fluharty and Katie Gerzabek were selected to USA Field Hockey's under-21 national team for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, from Monday to Sept. 23. The duo will miss the Terps' games against Dartmouth (Sunday), against Boston College (Sept. 14) and at Wake Forest (Sept. 22). Team USA will open the tournament against Venezuela on Monday. Up next will be Paraguay, followed by Trinidad and Tobago and Chile, before pool play ends against Jamaica on Sept. 17. With a successful bout in the preliminary pool rounds, the U.S. could face their biggest rival, Argentina or Canada, before reaching the podium. The top two countries will automatically qualify for the International Hockey Federation's seventh Women's Junior World Cup.

Men's soccer: Wake Forest freshman Mike Gamble (McDonogh) was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after scoring two goals in a 3-1 victory over Boston University on Friday night. Gamble also started and played the entire game Sunday in Wake Forest's 1-0 victory over West Virginia. ... UMBC junior forward Pete Caringi III (Calvert Hall) was chosen as the America East Conference Player of the Week. ... Navy freshman defenseman Derek Vogel was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. ... Salisbury (2-0) is ranked No. 12 in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

Women's soccer: Johns Hopkins senior goalkeeper Meredith Maguire was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Football: Salisbury senior superback Joe Benedetti was selected as the Beyond Sports Network Division III Offensive Player of the Week at running back. Also, Sea Gulls sophomore Tommy Hawks was honored as the Empire 8 Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
