Calvert Hall jumps over Gilman in state football poll

September 04, 2012|By Katherine Dunn

This week's Maryland High School Football Media State Poll features a reversal of the Baltimore area's top two teams as Calvert Hall leaps over Gilman.

The Cardinals moved from No. 4 to No. 3 while the Greyhounds dropped from No. 2 to No. 4. Calvert Hall improved to 2-0 with Friday's 30-6 victory over Dunbar, while the Greyhounds, who have a national-caliber season-opening stretch, dropped to 0-2 after falling to Good Counsel, 20-19, in overtime.

Good Counsel holds onto the No. 1 spot while Quince Orchard, last year's Class 4A state runner-up to Old Mill, rose to No. 3 after a 28-12 win over Sherwood.

Westminster, coming off a 41-6 romp over Tuscarora, entered the poll at No. 20. River Hill held at No. 6, while Old Mill dropped from No. 9 to No. 11. Below them, Arundel, Catonsville and Atholton all moved up, while McDonogh and Dunbar dropped but stay in the Top 20. South River, South Carroll, Hereford and Franklin all received votes.
