Bull and shrimp roast

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary sponsors a bull and shrimp roast at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Elkridge Fire Hall, 6275 Old Washington Road. The menu includes pit beef, turkey, ham, shrimp, oyster fritters and side dishes. There will be live music by No Idea, a raffle and door prizes. Tickets are $40 per person. Benefit run/walk

The Summer's End 5K Family Run/Walk will be held beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. The entry fee is $20 per person, $10 for children 12 and younger and $40 for a family of four or more. Proceeds go to the Elkridge Food Pantry and Garden. The event includes postrace food and music. The course is flat, paved and free of traffic. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. Bicycles, roller blades, scooters and motorized vehicles are not allowed. To register, go to summersend5k.org. Late registration is 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. The run/walk starts and finishes at the Elkridge Food Pantry, 5660 Furnace Ave. Parking is available at the Volleyball House. Participants and attendees are asked to bring canned items for the food pantry.

English conversation The Miller branch of the Howard County Public Library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, offers "Let's Get Together: English Conversation Club," a chance for those for whom English is a second language to practice speaking and understanding English in a group setting.
