The Howard County Junior Striders Fall Cross Country program registration is open. Register before Sept. 3; practices start Sept. 4. Go to http://www.striders.net or http://www.bullseyerunning.com for a registration form with all the details and an online registration link.

The ninth annual Knights of Columbus 10k Run will be held Sept. 1 at 8 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City. The annual charity race is organized by the Knights of Columbus St. Louis the King Council of St. Louis Parish. The event helps support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County.

This is a family event with lots of activities planned including music, food, random prizes, post race massages and a moon bounce for the kids. Cash awards ($150, $75 and $50 for the top three male and female finishers) and non-cash awards in seven age-group categories. The race course is USATF certified.

The National Family Resiliency Center 5k run and 1k walk will be held Sept. 22 starting at the Columbia Lakefront. Go to http://www.nfrchelp.org for details and registration.

Soccer

Team registration is being accepted for the Central Maryland Soccer League's annual Columbus Classic, which is held Oct. 6-7 in the Westminster area of Carroll County. The Classic is open to all USSF-affiliated school, recreation and club teams in the mid-Atlantic region and is sanctioned by SAY and US Club Soccer. Competition is available for both boys and girls teams in the single age groupings of U-8 through U14 and the dual ages of U-16 and U-18. The tournament format is round-robin.

The Thunder Soccer Club Spurs (U-10 boys, born after Aug. 1, 2002), coached by Kevin Cowley, will hold supplemental tryouts in August. The Spurs will play in the CMSSL and in several tournaments. Interested players should email kevin@spi-syst.com.

Ice hockey

The Long Reach ice hockey team is seeking players who plan to attend Long Reach High School in the fall and want to play ice hockey. No experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and have fun. The team will help with equipment. E-mail normasesto@comcast.net if interested.

Baseball/softball

Fall recreation baseball and softball registration is open for the Western Howard County Youth Baseball and Softball League. Softball

Registration is open for the HCYP fastpitch softball fall season for girls ages 5-17. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players. It also includes a competitive older league primarily for high school players not playing year-round but looking toward spring tryouts. Go to http://www.hcyp.org for information and registration.

Baseball

The 18-U Columbia Red Storm will play at Ripken Myrtle Beach this November and a full regular summer travel season in 2013 (MABA or Metro). The season includes several high profile tournaments at the high school level next summer. Tryouts begin Sept. 8 at the Oakland Mills High School baseball fields. Pitchers and catchers report at 11 a.m.. All other players report at noon. Interested players should contact Rick Hart at 443-285-9771 or by e-mail at 3ofharts.md@verizon.net.

The HCYP Raiders travel program is sponsoring teams from 8-U to 19-U for the 2013 season. The Raiders plan to have a total of 20 teams in 12 age groups, including two 12-U Cooperstown teams, an 18-U college prep team in the Eddie Brooks League and two American League team affiliations.

The Howard County Youth Program is holding open registration for the 2012-13 fall and spring baseball seasons. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5-18. Registration forms and further details are available at http://www.hcyp.org.

The 11-U Elkridge Hurricanes travel team is looking for a few good players. If you are interested in trying out, contact Cary Connell at cjconnell@comcast.net. Interested players must not be 12 as of May 1, 2013. The team will play a limited fall schedule and compete in the MABA Spring League and a number of local tournaments next summer.

Lacrosse

The Baltimore Hawks will hold tryouts for their 2014 and 2015 summer club teams Sept. 23 from 8-10 a.m. at Mustang Stadium on the Owings Mills campus of Stevenson University. The $40 tryout fee is non-refundable. For more information, call Tim Puls, 443-352-4298.

The Maryland Roughriders club team will hold tryouts for the summer 2013 teams Sept. 9 and 16 from noon-6 p.m. at CCBC-Catonsville. The Roughriders will field six teams: U-13, U-15, U-16 (two teams), U-18 Select and U-18 Elite. The tryout times are:

U-18 Elite and Select: noon-3 p.m., Sept. 9 and 16.

U-13, U-15 and U-16s: 3-6 p.m., Sept. 9 and 16.
