Girls cross country: Runners to watch

August 27, 2012|By Jeff Seidel | For The Baltimore Sun

Samantha Bingaman

South Carroll, senior

The senior will be one of the better Carroll County runners this season. Bingaman finished 10th in the Class 2A state championship meet last fall as South Carroll missed the title by one point.

Sara Carter

Hereford, junior

Serving as captain along with teammate Erin Causey, Carter will be a leader for the Bulls this year. Carter finished second in the state in Class 3A last year as Hereford won the team title.

Erin Causey

Hereford, junior

Causey will combine with Carter to give the Bulls a strong 1-2 punch. She was fifth in the Class 3A state championship race last season and worked hard this summer to prepare for her junior year.

Erin Dougherty

Broadneck, sophomore

Dougherty was 11th in the Class 4A state title meet in 2011 and should be a leader for the Bruins this season. She also finished eighth in the Anne Arundel County meet last year.

Ellie Gonzalez

Catholic, junior

Through her first two years in cross country and track, Gonzalez has dominated. She broke the IAAM championship meet record while easily winning that race last fall.

Isabel Griffith

Dulaney, junior

Her third-place finish in the Class 4A state championship race was one of the best efforts by a local runner that day. She'll be a key for Dulaney and one of the area's top runners.

Hannah Mansbach

Glenelg Country, senior

Last year, Mansbach had the third-best time at the IAAM championship meet. Showing improvement throughout her career, it remains to be seen how good she'll be during her senior year.

Julia Nardone

Glenelg, sophomore

After an impressive freshman year, Nardone will be aiming for more this season. She finished second in the Howard County meet and later finished fifth at the Class 2A state championship race.

Sarah Rinehart

Liberty, sophomore

Rinehart had a successful freshman year in cross country and track for the Lions. Her seventh-place finish in Class 2A at the state meet ended the season in style.

Rachel Yep

Mount Hebron, senior

Over the course of her career, Yep has grown into a solid distance runner who has been a big help to Mount Hebron. Last year, she finished eighth in the state at the Class 3A championship meet.
