A man was injured Friday night after he was shot by police in South Baltimore.

Officers went to the 2400 block of Maisel Court in Westport around 10 p.m. after receiving calls of someone discharging a gun in the area, said Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

The man appeared to be firing a gun outside a female companion's home, Guglielmi said.

When officers arrived, the man engaged them and "fired at least one round in the general direction of the police officers," Guglielmi said.

Three officers returned fire, he said, and at least one shot him in the lower extremities, he said.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition late Friday, Guglielmi said.

Homicide detectives are investigating, which is customary in all police-involved shootings, he said.
