"At this point, I don't know," Romero said. "As a husband and as a father it gets to a point in your life where you have to say enough is enough."

Hunter sent to Bowie

Hunter, who allowed eight runs over three innings in Wednesday's 12-3 loss to the Texas Rangers, was optioned to Double-A Bowie on Friday.

Hunter, who has allowed a major league-most 32 homers this season and eight over his last four starts, had already been sent to Norfolk twice, but Showalter said Hunter would be sent to the club where he best fit into the rotation. Bowie's season ends Sept. 3, the final day Hunter has to be in the minors before he's eligible to be recalled (barring an injury to a player on the big league club) .

"I have no idea what their plans are," Hunter said. "I can expect to get the ball, start a couple of games and go from there. I can expect to be pretty damn good these next couple of starts. I can probably expect that."

Around the horn

Wilson Betemit (right wrist) will begin swinging a bat Monday and is expected to leave Sarasota, Fla., for a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday or Wednesday to beat the possible tropical storm that could hit Florida's Gulf Coast. … Showalter announced that rookie right-hander Steve Johnson will start Saturday's game against Toronto. … First-round pick Kevin Gausman allowed two runs on five hits over three innings in his second start at High-A Frederick. Gausman has allowed six runs in six innings at Frederick.
