Alcohol and Drug Abuse Advisory Board — Seeking board members to serve five-year terms, and help review services and need for services relating to alcohol or drug abuse education, treatment and prevention in Howard County. Must be Howard County residents, age 18 or older; have an interest in drug and alcohol treatment, and prevention services; and be able to attend meetings on the third Wednesday of each month, 5:15-6:30 p.m., at the Howard County Health Department, 7178 Colombia Gateway Drive, Columbia. Alzheimer's Association in Howard County — Family support group facilitator positions available with Alzheimer's Association in Howard County. Candidates should have some professional or personal experience in dementia care giving. One year commitment expected. Free training will be provided. American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery — Seeking volunteer drivers (and their vehicles) for Howard County cancer patients who need transportation to and from treatment facilities. "Road" volunteers provide an essential service for patients who have no car, may be too ill to drive or have family members and friends who may not have the time or financial means to provide this support. A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring-Tutoring Inc. — Seeks adult volunteers to be mentor-tutors to Howard County public school students who can benefit from extra attention and encouragement to succeed. Volunteers meet with students individually or in small groups, during the school day and in after school programs. A-OK seeks dependable community members who enjoy being with children and care strongly about the success of all children. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour/week for one school year. Participating elementary schools are Atholton, Bryant Woods, Cradlerock, Deep Run, Forest Ridge, Guilford, Longfellow, Phelps Luck, Running Brook and Stevens Forest. Better BedRest Inc. — A nonprofit that provides resources, support and referrals for women on bed rest because of high-risk pregnancies. Seeking volunteers to talk to women on bed rest and help with fundraisers. Phone volunteers must have had a pregnancy bed rest experience or connection to bed rest (non-phone volunteers do not need bed rest experience). Cable Advisory Committee — Seeking applicants for a five-year term on the committee, which provides recommendations to the county executive and County Council on all matters related to the Howard County cable system and its facilities. Candidates must be county residents, 18 or older, have an interest in cable and be able to attend the committee's meetings, held on the second Wednesday in March, June, September and December, at 7 p.m., in the George Howard Building, in Ellicott City. Additional meetings may be called for by the committee chairperson. Meetings are open to the public and become a matter of public record. Cancer to 5K — Recruiting cancer survivors and volunteers for the fall season in each of their three locations: Baltimore, Washington DC/Northern Virginia and Howard County. Join coaches and volunteer sherpas for 12 weeks of progressive running or walking with the ultimate goal of finishing a 5K race in October. The fall season began the week of July 23 and ends at the Baltimore Running Festival 5K on Oct. 13.
