Weigh-in for fun at the White Marlin Open

August 09, 2012|By Brooks Welsh, Special to The Baltimore Sun

It has big boats, good food, cold drinks and oh yeah, it's the biggest bill fishing tournament of its kind. The 39th Annual White Marlin Open ends tomorrow and you will be beating yourself up if you don't stop by for this one.

Taking place all week, with the official weigh-in scale located in Harbour Island on 14th Street and the Bay, spectators can watch the fisherman weigh-in their catch everyday between 4 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. while enjoying all the festivities the tournament has to offer. You can get a glimpse of White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo and other various fish being weighed as the boats come in at the end of each day. (You can also check out the live Marlin Cam for the afternoon weigh-ins, starting around 4:15 p.m.)

In addition to the weighing of the various fish caught, there's live music, delicious food, cold beers and crushes, and cool White Marlin Open T-shirts for sale. Essentially it's one big party on the bay in celebration of the world's largest billfish tournament and one of the longest standing OC traditions.

Also, if you are looking for a sit down dinner right in the middle of the tournament, the Reel Inn is right there for you to enjoy fresh fish and other dishes.

While it costs $1,000 for a boat to register for The Open, it's free for spectators to enter and enjoy the festivities. There is no parking for the public in Harbour Island, but you can find parking at the Convention Center with a shuttle to the community, parking at the Presbyterian Church on 14th with a donation or you can always try to find street parking.

The White Marlin Open is a unique and fantastic event for all ages so stop by Harbour Island and enjoy!
