Alcohol and Drug Abuse Advisory Board — Seeking board members to serve five-year terms, and help review services and need for services relating to alcohol or drug abuse education, treatment and prevention in Howard County. Candidates must be Howard County residents, age 18 or older; have an interest in drug and alcohol treatment, and prevention services; and be able to attend the board's meetings on the third Wednesday of each month, from 5:15-6:30 p.m., at the Howard County Health Department, 7178 Colombia Gateway Drive, Columbia. American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery — Seeking volunteer drivers (and their vehicles) to help provide transportation assistance for Howard County cancer patients who need transportation to and from treatment facilities. "Road" volunteers provide an essential and necessary service for patients who have no car, may be too ill to drive or have family members and friends who may not have the time or financial means to provide this support. A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring-Tutoring Inc. — Seeks adult volunteers to be mentor-tutors to Howard County public school students who can benefit from extra attention and encouragement to succeed. Volunteers meet with students individually or in small groups, during the school day and in after school programs. A-OK seeks dependable community members who genuinely enjoy being with children and care strongly about the success of all children. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour/week for one school year. Participating elementary schools are Atholton, Bryant Woods, Cradlerock, Deep Run, Forest Ridge, Guilford, Longfellow, Phelps Luck, Running Brook and Stevens Forest. Better BedRest Inc. — A nonprofit that provides resources, support and referrals for women on bed rest because of high-risk pregnancies. Seeking volunteers to talk to women on bedrest and help with fundraisers. Phone volunteers must have had a pregnancy bedrest experience or connection to bedrest (non-phone volunteers do not need bedrest experience). Cable Advisory Committee — Seeking applicants interested in serving a five-year term on the committee, which provides recommendations to the county executive and County Council on all matters related to the Howard County cable system and its facilities. Candidates must be county residents, 18 or older, have an interest in cable and be able to attend the committee's meetings, which are held quarterly on the second Wednesday in March, June, September and December, at 7 p.m., in the George Howard Building, in Ellicott City. Additional meetings may be called for by the committee chairperson when, in his or her opinion, it is important to consider a matter immediately. Meetings are open to the public and become a matter of public record.
