Small school experience helps Ravens rookie Asa Jackson realize big opportunity

August 06, 2012|By Matt Vensel, The Baltimore Sun

Nine of last season's Pro Bowlers hailed from non-FBS schools. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and former San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson were among them, as were Ravens cornerback Corey Graham, who made it as a special teams standout for the Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod, who attended Towson.

As Birkexplained, "If you can play, they will find you."

But the Ravens have had their share of misses, too, like cornerback David Pittman, a third-round pick in 2006 from Northwestern State who played just seven games in two seasons with the team. Offensive tackle Ramon Harewood, whom the Ravens selected from Div. II Morehouse in the sixth round in 2010, has been plagued with injuries and is losing his grip on his roster spot.

Jackson hopes to be another success story like Webb or fellow corner Cary Williams, who went to Div. II Washburn. The coaching, training and support staffs in Baltimore are much larger than what was in place at Cal Poly, and he can't believe how many people want to help him succeed.

"It's been a huge jump, but I almost didn't even know how to act at first because I've never had this much help," he said. "So coming here has been a blessing. I love everything about this place and just how attentive everybody is to helping us get the most out of ourselves on the field."
