Notes: Orioles trade for Quintanilla, lose Bergesen to Arizona

July 20, 2012|By Dan Connolly, The Baltimore Sun

Showalter said Roberts is trying to rehab the tear and for several days has hit "light toss" and swung a bat from both sides of a tee. Roberts "plans to progress to baseball activities and trunk stabilization if tolerated," Showalter said.

There is no timetable for his return or when he'll decide whether to have surgery. Roberts played in just 17 games this season after coming back from the ongoing effects of a concussion.

"He'll reach the point where it's, 'Yeah I can do this' or not," Showalter said. "If you know Brian, he is trying to take this approach because it gives him a chance to play for us again this year. We'll see when he really starts pushing baseball activities what happens."

Around the horn

Andino (left shoulder subluxation) is in Baltimore and is still feeling lingering soreness. He is "not close to trying baseball activities yet," Showalter said. He will be re-evaluated next week. … Right fielder Nick Markakis said he was dealing with some soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, but it wasn't enough to sideline him. … Pitcher Stu Pomeranz received a cortisone shot in his back on Thursday and has showed "marked improvement," Showalter said. … Pitching for Triple-A Norfolk, Brian Matusz gave up six earned runs on nine hits and one walk in six innings Friday night at Syracuse. He struck out four. ... Top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy allowed one run — a solo homer — on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings Friday night in High-A Frederick's game at Winston-Salem. He struck out six and walked one. ... Remarkably, the Orioles have won 12 games this season without getting a hit with runners in scoring position and have won nine more with just one hit with runners in scoring position. That includes Thursday's victory in Minnesota.
