Obama of 2008 more qualified than Romney of 2012

July 19, 2012

Gail Householder's letter to the editor ("Obama fails VP test," July 18) in response to David Wise's op-ed on vice-presidential qualifications asks "if these qualifications are necessary . . . how can anyone defend President Obama's election?" I had already asked Mr. Wise how Barack Obama and Mitt Romney fared in his approach. His reply:

"Obama upon being elected was in the low 60s. [Mr.] Romney's score is much lower. He only served four years as a governor, never in the legislature, has no Washington experience and no foreign policy experience.

"In spite of all that was stated when he was elected, [Mr.] Obama's prior experience puts him near the middle of past presidents."
