Vegetables are good for you, Sun

July 17, 2012

I was extremely disappointed when I turned to The Sun's "At Home" section of July 15 to see that the winners of the Garden Contest 2012 did not include any vegetable or container garden categories. Your submission request which I responded to indicated, "The Baltimore Sun is searching for the most beautiful and creative gardens in the metropolitan area. Flower gardens, vegetable gardens, shade gardens, container gardens and even water gardens will be considered ..." I assumed these were the categories you were considering.

Consequently, when I saw the winning categories were "large, medium, and small gardens," and "novelty gardens," I was quite confused. My submission of a vegetable container garden on my 10-foot by 10-foot deck encompasses two of your requested categories. The Sun missed a golden opportunity to educate its readers on the importance of Maryland's "Grow It, Eat It" gardening initiative. My vegetable container garden is thriving with a delicious harvest of various vegetables, including corn and hand-pollinated watermelons. Moreover, my vegetable and flower containers are as beautiful as they are fruitful.
