Joe Vellano continues to rack up the preseason accolades. After making the Bednarik Award watch list Monday, the senior Maryland defensive lineman was named Thursday to the watch lists for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy.
The Nagurski Trophy is given annually to the nation's top defensive player, and the Outland Trophy is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. Both are selected by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), and the Charlotte Touchdown Club also helps select the Nagurski Trophy.
The Nagurski Trophy will be selected from a pool of five finalists on Nov. 15, and the winner will be presented Dec. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Outland Trophy is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The three finalists will be named Nov. 19, and the trophy will be awarded on The Home Depot College Football Awards show Dec. 6 on ESPN.
Vellano, a preseason All-American, has recorded 157 career tackles, including 7.5 sacks in his Terps career. His 7.8 tackles per game as a junior led all FBS lineman.
