A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect Saturday for the Baltimore region until midnight, according to meteorologist Steve Zubrick.
The watch covers the city and Baltimore, Harford, Carroll, Washington, Frederick, Cecil and Kent counties along with the northern tip of the Chesapeake Bay, said Zubrick, who is the science and operations officer at the National Weather Service's regional office in Sterling, Va.
The storm system is caused by a weak front coupled with the high daytime temperatures and humidity, Zubrick said. The biggest cluster of storms is moving off the New Jersey coast, and the watch may be canceled before midnight, he said.
Thunderstorms are possible for the Baltimore region Sunday with highs in the lower 90s, Zubrick said. The forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a 50 percent change of rain.
Cooler air is expected to move in early next week with a high in the mid-80s on Monday.
