Navy boot camps The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center of the U.S. Naval Academy holds its annual "Navy Way" boot camps July 14 and Aug. 18. Basic Boot Camp is a morning program; Advanced Boot Camp is an afternoon program. Basic Boot Camp is for recruits ages 6-12 and runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Recruits are issued a sailor's cap, learn Navy terms, march, chant, follow orders and eat in a simulated mess hall. The cost is $35 and includes a "Dixie cup" cap, camp, lunch (two slices of pizza and a soda) and a certificate of participation at graduation. Advanced Boot Camp is for graduates of Basic Boot Camp ages 9-12 and runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants take seamanship training (tying knots), learn how to use semaphore flags and march in precision drill. The cost is $40 and includes all training materials. Graduates attain the rank of Swabbie 1st Class and receive a certificate of participation and a button for their cap at graduation.
