A man driving a stolen car in Baltimore died Wednesday morning when he crashed the vehicle causing it to flip over — landing on top of him — and burst into flames, police said.

The crash occurred about 3:40 a.m. at the Westport exit off I-295, Baltimore police said.

A 2006 Nissan Maxima was traveling south on I-295 when it entered the exit ramp, struck a curb and began flipping over onto the grass median, police said. The driver, who police have not yet identified, was thrown from the vehicle, which trapped him beneath it, and caught fire, according to police.

Firefighters and paramedics responded and pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

The Nissan was reported stolen on June 24 from a Baltimore address, police said.

Officers are continuing to investigate. Southbound lanes of I-295 had been closed due to the crash.
