Ousted Anne Arundel County Council member Daryl D. Jones, who was convicted of failing to file a tax return, is scheduled to be released Thursday from a federal prison in South Carolina.
The Severn Democrat will return home from a five-month sentence to see his council seat occupied by a replacement and will be unable to immediately, if ever, return to his law practice.
The county council removed Jones from office, contending that once he reported to prison he would no longer live in Council District 1. Jones has appealed a court ruling in the council's favor. In its 108th round of voting, the council named Marine Reservist Peter I. Smith to fill Jones' seat.
In February, Jones had agreed to have his law license suspended indefinitely, with permission to ask the Court of Appeals in August to return his law license.
