The summer solstice arrives at 7:09 p.m. Wednesday, apropos for what should be the hottest day of the year (until Thursday, at least).

And it could be the hottest first day of summer in Baltimore.

There will be four minutes shy of 15 hours of daylight in Baltimore, but that will start shrinking on Thursday by a handful of seconds each day. Sunsets will linger around 8:37 p.m. for a few days while the sunrise begins to move later, around 5:41 a.m.

While the first day of summer doesn't always fall on June 20, Wednesday could see the hottest temperature recorded at BWI Marshall Airport on that date. The summer solstice occurs between June 20 and June 22 each year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The highest temperature recorded for Baltimore on each of those dates is 100 degrees, a mark that will be threatened Wednesday and Thursday.
