A 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound was found outside in a field by a nearby resident in the 11400 block of Frederick Road in Ellicott City about 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, according to Howard County police.

Police do not believe the boy, who is from Baltimore County, shot himself, and are "investigating the possibility of foul play," police said.

The boy was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was in critical but stable condition late Tuesday, police said.

Detectives are investigating the incident, and are working with investigators from other local jurisdictions to determine how and why the shooting occurred, said Sherry Llewellyn, a police spokeswoman.

No further details were immediately available.
