Orioles pregame: Markakis out of tonight's lineup, but says he's day-to-day

TORONTO — Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis knew when he woke up this morning he wouldn’t be able to play in tonight’s series finale against the Blue Jays at the Rogers Center.

Markakis, who injured his right wrist while swinging during his final at bat in the Orioles’ 8-6 loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday, said he considers himself day-to-day. X-rays on the wrist were negative and he’s scheduled to see a hand specialist Thursday in Tampa Bay.

“When I woke up this morning, I knew I had no chance,” Markakis said, his wrist tightly wrapped. “It was just swollen and it didn’t feel right, and I couldn’t pick up a bat or anything. We’ll see what tomorrow brings and go from there.”

Markakis had played in all 50 games this season, 48 in rightfield and two as the team’s starting DH. He last missed a game on Sept. 25 last season.

He said he’s never had issues with the wrist before and that he's just as confused about the injury as everyone else.

“It’s not like I took awkward swing or anything,” he said. “It’s just, I don’t know, I swung and it didn’t feel right. I knew right away.

“A swing, that was it,” he said. “I don’t know anything else. I don’t know what’s wrong with it. I just swung and it didn’t feel good. I’m still feeling a good amount of pain, so we’ll see tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll have some test done tomorrow, so we’ll see how that goes. … We’ll see what tomorrow brings, and we should have a more definite decision tomorrow.”

Markakis, a 2011 Gold Glove winner, is hitting .256/.333/.452 with eight homers and 26 RBI in 50 games and also has two outfield assists.

Without Markakis in the No. 3 spot, the Orioles lineup looks remarkably different. Chris Davis is hitting third as the DH. Ryan Flaherty will start in right field. Also, Mark Reynolds is making his second start at first base since coming off the DL on Monday.
