A 22-year-old man attempting to cross Coastal Highway near 54th Street early Monday morning was struck and killed by a drunk driver, Ocean City Police said.

Towson University student Matthew Jude Cheswick, of Cooksville, was pronounced dead at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Police said the driver of the vehicle that hit Cheswick did not stop after the accident and instead continued traveling north on Coastal Highway. Witnesses followed the car until police arrived to arrest the driver, identified as Diogo Miller Facchini, 30, of Lorton, Va.

Facchini was speeding in an Isuzu Rodeo when the accident occurred about 1:20 a.m., police said. He has been charged with homicide by a motor vehicle while intoxicated, along with other traffic charges that include leaving the scene of a fatal collision and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police said Facchini is awaiting arraignment in Ocean City District Court.
