Weekend: Tune in for Healthy Harbor, go out to Loch Raven

May 25, 2012|Tim Wheeler

Many folks may be traveling on this long Memorial Day holiday weekend, but if you're going to be around, here are two activities not to miss on Saturday.

The first one's a snap - you don't even have to leave the house, or get out of your PJs.

At 9 a.m Saturday (May 26), local cable, broadcast and satellite TV stations will feature a half-hour documentary about the Healthy Harbor campaign to make Baltimore's harbor swimmable and fishable by the end of the decade.  The algae bloom and fish kills this week are furnishing a pungent reminder of why this campaign was launched.

The film is produced by the Waterfront Partnership and the Living Classrooms Foundation, two of the groups behind the campaign.  But the film itself features youngsters talking in language young and old can understand about the harbor's industrial history, the trash and pollution afflicting it and what can be done to fix it.

Here's a list of TV stations and outlets airing the film:

WBFF Fox Cable -  206
WBFF Fox Digital -  45.2
Comcast -  206
Verizon Fios -  465
Digital -  45.2
Broadstripe -  406

Then, properly inspired by watching the film get dressed and head out to Loch Raven in Baltimore County for a tour of the recently renovated and enlarged dam and learn about its role in the reservoir system that furnishes fresh, clean water to Baltimore area households.

There'll also be wildlife exhibits, historic reenactors, guided hikes and live music. Visitors are welcome to bring a lunch and picnic by the dam. The fourth annual Loch Raven Day runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  For more, go here.
