May 16, 2012

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department Junior Firefighters will sponsor a luau youth dance for ages 9-15 on Saturday, May 19, 7-10 p.m., at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road. Tickets are available at the door for $10 per person with a maximum of 200 tickets sold.

Food and beverages, which includes pizza, corn dogs, pretzels, nachos, candy, water and sodas, will also be for sale at the dance. As always, the department enforces a "no exceptions" policy on appropriate behavior and dress code for its youth dances, and also mandates a strict adult sign-in/sign-out procedure for attendance.

For more information on the dance, call 410-761-6633 (and select option 5), or go to http://www.ElkridgeVFD.org.

Lori Gerus, volunteer coordinator for the Elkridge Food Pantry, would like to thank all the wonderful Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing Crews, Girl Scouts and their leaders for their diligent work and generous contributions to the pantry on behalf of the less fortunate in our area. The annual "Scouting for Food" initiative was a huge success, thanks to these hardworking folks, as well as those who took the time to put non-perishables in the widely distributed collection bags left on mailboxes a few nights before the weekend collection drive.

While we're on the subject of the food pantry, don't forget that the Elkridge Food Pantry drop box is now conveniently located at Green Valley Marketplace. Since their opening in November 2011, Green Valley has been a generous advocate of the pantry, donating cartfuls of food and baked goods, and now they have stepped up to assist the pantry even further by hosting the donation box at the store.

Conveniently located just past the checkout registers, you are invited to grab a few extra items and place them in the donation box. The pantry appreciates your generosity, and extends heartfelt gratitude to Green Valley for their ongoing support. For more information on how you can help the EFP through monetary donations, perishable goods, or volunteer efforts, please contact Gerus at algerus@juno.com.

Here's a fun, woman-focused event that you surely won't want to miss! Presented by the Howard County Office on Aging, the annual Womenfest is an interactive day focusing on health, wellness, fashion, and beauty, and is designed to inspire women to live more balanced, healthy, and fulfilled lives. In addition to a wide array of dynamic vendors and exhibitors, Womenfest includes relevant and engaging seminars and important and free health screenings.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center at Glenwood, 2400 Route 97, in Cooksville. It will also feature a free jazz concert by Howard County's own Deanna Bogart.

Admission is free; lunch is available for purchase; and don't forget to bring a lawn chair for the concert. For more information, go to http://www.howardcountyaging.org/womenfest, or call 410-313-5440.

That's all for this week, but keep those emails coming! If you've got anything to share with your friends and neighbors, I'd love to hear about it and pass it on. Until next time, please pay it forward and practice random acts of kindness. Thanks and have a stellar week!
