Southwest offers 35% discount on July 4 flights

One-day-only flash sale slams airline's website as travelers pounce

Southwest Airlines is offering a flash-in-the-pan sale today only for some very specific travel dates, including July 4, and the deal has set off a frenzy that appears to have taken down booking on the airline's website.

Travelers can save 35 percent off Wanna Get Away fares when they book a trip today for one of these dates: May 22, May 30-31, June 5-6 , July 4-5. Use promo code: SUMMER12 to get the discount.

That's pretty good deal since you're saving off the lowest fares the airline offers online. And it includes days on or near Memorial Day and Fourth of July. You can't use Rapid Rewards points or combine the offer with other DING! deals, duh, of course. Also, for some reason, it excludes flight pairs from Baltimore to San Diego or Fort Myers. So strike those two cities from your holiday plans!

I love a flash sale as much as the next traveler - and there must be a lot of travelers because the typically reliable Southwest website has been on the blink. It took me several minutes, but I was able to check for fares from Baltimore to Albuquerque. No, I'm not crazy enough to go to the desert in summer, but I did want to get an example of the savings and that's the search that worked. You can fly from BWI to ABQ for as little as $108 on June 5. (Wanna Get Away fare was originally $161.)

Southwest says its tech team is working on the site, so keep trying. Or call 1-800-435-9792. The fares are well worth it.
