Lefty Zach Phillips in Orioles clubhouse

If he's officially promoted, Jason Berken could be on way down

Left-hander Zach Phillips, the last roster casualty in spring training, is in the Orioles clubhouse today.

He said hello to manager Buck Showalter, then went to his locker. He doesn’t know whether he’ll be activated today. Part of that might have to do with the weather as well. It’s still a consistent rain here at Camden Yards.

“I got here, said, ‘Hi,’ to Buck, told him I was here and [he] said, ‘We’ll talk later.’” Phillips said. “And that was it.”

If Phillips is activated, one possible move would be sending down righty Jason Berken to Triple-A Norfolk. Berken allowed seven runs (two earned) in one inning of relief Monday against the Texas Rangers.

Berken and Stu Pomeranz (three scoreless innings) were called up Monday to give the bullpen some relief after it threw 12 2/3 innings Sunday.

Phillips, 25, had a 1.13 ERA in 10 games for the Orioles last year. This season at Triple-A Norfolk, he has a 4.15 ERA and three saves in nine games. He allowed 15 hits, issued five walks and struck out 11 in 13 innings.

“It’s been good. The team is coming along good, a lot of good guys,” Phillips said. “It has been fun.”

Phillips was hoping to break camp with the Orioles but is just one month behind.

“They had a tough choice to make. And so be it,” Phillips said. “I’m glad to be back, and hopefully I can stay and help the team win.”

Here is Tuesday’s Orioles lineup:

Chavez 7
Hardy 6
Markakis 9
Jones 8
Wieters 2
Davis 3
Betemit 5
Reynolds DH
Andino 4
Arrieta 1
