Ravens' key remaining offseason dates

May 05, 2012|By Jeff Zrebiec

May 11-13: Second-round pick Courtney Upshaw and the rest of the Ravens’ 2012 draft class will hit the practice fields together for the first time for a three-day, mandatory rookie mini-camp next Friday through Sunday.

May 21-23, May 28-30, June 4-6: Those are the three-day dates for organized team activities. The OTAs are voluntary for the players, but the Ravens figure to have pretty good attendance.

June 12-14: The Ravens will hold their only mandatory mini-camp for the veteran players. The big question will be whether running back Ray Rice, who is hoping for a contract extension this offseason rather than playing the season under the franchise tag, shows up and participates or does he make another statement by staying away?

July 16: The Ravens will have until 4 p.m. to reach a multi-year deal with Ray Rice or he’ll be forced to play the season under the franchise tag. If they can’t reach a deal by this date, he won’t be able to sign an extension until after the 2012 season. While the Ravens have maintained some dialogue with Rice’s agent, Todd France, it would be surprising if this situation doesn’t go right up to the 4 p.m. deadline. The Ravens reached a long-term agreement with last year’s franchised player, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, only a couple of hours before the deadline.

July 21: This is the tentative date for the start of training camp and the first practice for rookies, quarterbacks and injured players. The rest of the team reports four days later on July 25.

July 26: All the Ravens will be on the field for the very first time as this day marks the first full-team practice of training camp. Ravens’ training camp will be held at the team’s Owings Mills facility for the second straight year after 15 years in Westminster.

Aug. 9: The Ravens will open up their four-game preseason schedule with a trip to the Georgia Dome to face the Atlanta Falcons. They have two home preseason games against the Detroit Lions (Aug. 17) and Jacksonville Jaguars (Aug. 23), and a road game against theSt. Louis Rams (Aug. 30).
