John Harbaugh goes off — yes, that John Harbaugh

May 01, 2012|By Kevin Cowherd

What in the world came over John Harbaugh this morning? Ravens fans, you might want to circle the Sept. 23 game against the New England Patriots on your calendar. Might be a few extra fireworks at M&T Bank Stadium that night. Things could definitely be a little frosty between the Ravens coach and Mr. Smiley himself, Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

I say that because Harbaugh -- who is normally affable, but guarded with the media -- opened up and took a few shots at the Patriots this morning on  98 Rock. Did I say a few shots? No, this was a smart bomb the man dropped.

Even though the ostensible subject of the interview was the New Orleans Saints and "Bountygate," Harbaugh quickly veered off in another direction.

He told the radio station he thinks the Patriots accomplishments -- that would include three Super Bowl titles -- have been tainted by Spygate, the scandal that involved New England coaches videotaping opposing sidelines to decipher coaches' signals.

"In the end, everything is brought before the light of day, when it's all said and done,"Harbaugh said. "What happens, even the thing in New England, no matter whether those thing had any impact on whether they won their championships or not, they got asterisks now. It's been stained."

Wow. Talk about a quote that's going viral. It's everywhere now. And again, it's completely out of character for Harbaugh to say anything that could be used as bulleton-board fodder for another team.

Wonder if he regrets it now? He's already released a statement clarifying his comments.

I would have loved to have seen Belichick's face when the quote was read back to him. He had to be majorly ticked.

Although how could you tell?
